Every company has values on the wall. Literally on the wall. Printed, framed, sometimes painted in that startup font that’s supposed to feel human.

“Integrity.” “Transparency.” “People First.”

Here’s what I’ve noticed. The companies that put values on the wall are the ones that need the reminder. You don’t see a sign in your kitchen that says “don’t burn the house down.” You just don’t burn it down.

The values wall is a tell. It means someone in leadership knows there’s a gap between what they say and what they do, and they think a sign will cover it.

I’ve never seen a company fire someone for violating the values wall. I’ve seen plenty fire people for pointing out that the company was violating it.
